Article I: Name

The name of this organization shall be the Michigan College English Association, an affiliate of the College English Association.

Article II: Objective

The objective of this organization shall be to:

  1. 1.Provide opportunities for the discussion of the place of letters in the American college, the preparation of college teachers in graduate school, and the concerns of literary scholars in their capacity as teachers, and

  2. 2.Make more effective its belief that liberal education - in particular the emotional and mental discipline of English studies – is essential to moral and intellectual progress in the modern world.

Article III: Membership

Section I: Membership in the Michigan College English Association shall be open to all teachers of undergraduate English in colleges and junior colleges in the State of Michigan and to those residents of Michigan who have so taught. Anyone eligible may become a member by presenting his name to the secretary and paying the dues.

Section II: The dues may be revised from time to time at a regular business meeting. (Current dues are fifteen dollars {$15.00} per year).

Article IV: Officers

Section I: The officers of this organization shall be: a President, a Vice President, a Secretary, a Treasurer, a Newsletter Editor, a Web Master, and a CEA Liaison. These officers shall be elected following the annual conference. The President and the Vice President shall hold office for one year or until their successors are elected. Other officers shall hold office for two years or until their successors are elected. A vacancy in any office will be filled by email election after a call for nominations.
Section II: Nominations will be called for during the regular fall meeting at which time, deadlines for nominations and submission of ballots will be announced.
Section III: In addition to the regular duties commonly performed by the above officers, the Vice President shall serve as program chair; the Secretary shall handle correspondence and publicity; the Treasurer shall be in charge of the membership roles and coordinate campus representatives; and the Newsletter Editor shall be in charge of the membership mailing list.

Article V: Meetings

There shall be an annual meeting during the fall, the time and place to be selected by the president at the invitation of the institution desiring to serve as host.

Article VI: Committees

Such committees shall be amended by the president as the organization shall from time to time deem necessary to carry on its work.

Article VII: Amendments

The constitution may be amended by a two-thirds vote of the ballots submitted via email or regular mail, provided notice of the proposed change was given at the previous meeting.
